St. James's May 28th. 1698.

Sir

I received yours of the 25th. Instant and am in answer there=
unto to acquaint you that the Commissioners of the Victualling Office
attending my Lord Romney at the Board of Ordnance some days agoe,
told his Lordship that they should haue no Occasion for a Storekeeper
in Newfoundland Whereupon my Lord and the Board resolved that (for
easing the charge of the Office) the Master Gunner should likewise offi
ciate the Storekeepers place there, having some small addition to his
allowance of Master Gunner towards his Extraordinary trouble; As for
the chain Boom &c. mentioned in yours, I am informed they are
things the Office of Ordnance do never provide, and therefore
they were not included in the Estimate sent from the Principle
Officers of the Ordnance to his Lordship. The Person intended by
My Lord to be Master Gunner at Newfoundland is now there, so
that if the Lords Commissioners of the Council of Trade &c have any
Instructions or directions to send him, their Lordships may please to send
the same to My Lord Romney and care will be taken to transmit
them to him I am
