Ever Honored Sir Portsmouth the 23th. of October 1682

Since you are to haue the vew of the
papers, I haue sent to the Lords &a I hope you will be
pleased to exscuse me for not Sending you a Coppy [you]
will finde I am somewhat perticular Conserning the
Province of Mayne Let me beg of you as you tend
the welfaire of his Majesties Interest & the Introducti[on]
and well Settling his Government in New England to pr[o]
=mote that business, for vnless that Province be vnited to
New Hampshire, it will be Impossible for the Kings Gover[n]
ment to be Supported however it hat bin represented
by Mr Mason at Whitehall, the Condicion of the people
in his Province is very meane and not Likely to Improve
haueing no ffishery nor Tymber Considerable Left to
Carry on Trade, the people are willing to contribute whath
they are able to do towards the Support of His Majesties Gover
ment, and to pay Mr Mason anything to their ability
but are very [illegible] sloe in turning Tennants to him, he
seemes dissattisfied. I haue not Justified him in all his
quarrels he had with the people when he was here before
and yet I haue not proceeded as he would haued don[e] [had?]
he bin Governor I finde them more dutifull in th[eir]
behavuiour and Exspressions towards his Majesty & Gover[nment]
then I did Expect, & the [illegible] pray heartely for his [illegible]
there being a greate want of armes in this Province, hop[e]
you will be pleased to moue the Lords &a. to procure four
hundred & fifty firelock muskets & one hundred Carbyns
& one hundred Case of pistols without which wee cannot be
Safe against the Indiens, who are well Armed by the ffrench
which makes them verry Insolent, The Assembly meets
14th of November, I dout not but to get such Lawes past, as

will be Sattisfactory I haue put Mr Chamberlaine ^ into the Execution of your and
his own office alsoe Mr. Randolph, who is now with us, he
and Mr. Mason last night gaue in writeing, their Seu
=erall Charges against Major Waldron & Mr Martyn, I
wish they make out their charge. I hear their Witnesses
faile them; when I haue examined I shall giue a farther
account to His Majesty, I haue ordered Mr Chamberlayn[e]
to audite the Publique account of all monies that has bin
raised since His Majesties Commission the 18th. of September
1679 which shall be transmitted with all other proceedings by
the next oppertunity I haue Sent the Seale by the Captain of the
Man a warr, I pray exscuse me, that I had not time to
write to Mr Povey being in great Hurry, I present my
humble Seruice to them all perticularly and Mr Gwynn
which is all from
