[Recto]

Whitehall the 10th. May 1701.

Sr.

I had already dispatcht the Enclos'd Letter to the Earl
of Bellamont, when the News of his Death reacht this Place,
which containing Business proper for your Cognizance, I
send the same to you for your Guidance & Direction.

There is one thing more I must mention to you before
I conclude, which is that Mrs. Van Cortlant Widow of
Mr. Van Cortlant has complained of great hardships put
upon her relating to her Books of Accompts, and other
Matters, and to the end she may meet with all just
Relief I send you a Copy of her Letter to me, not doubting
but regard will be had to the Condition she is left in, and to
the Memory of her Husband who was always reputed a very
honest Man, and particularly I hope that as she has paid
three hundred Pounds upon my Bills for the use of the Government
so She may have a Discharge for the same, to all which
foregoing particulars I pray your Answer.

You have Letters from the Council of Trade and
Plantations, recommending to you a due Care of the
Government. now in your hands, and in like Manner I
assure myself you will endeavour the Improvement of
the Revenue, wherein you know I have a particular Concern,
and for that Purpose you will be attended from time to time
by Mr. de Peyster my Deputy, I shall not trouble you
further at present, but am

Sr
Your most humble Servant
William Blathwayt
