Whitehall 8 September 1683

Sr.

By your first letter of the 30th: of may I plainly
see my Lord Culpeper has given the Revenue
no quarter. Whether it were in prospect
of what had ^ since hap'ned I cannot tell but His
Lordships Power of disposing of the Publick
Treasury being now expired you ^ will have other
orders to follow hence forward. I am
also to thank you for yours of the 10th
June which brought me a Bill of Exchange
for one years Salary and a promise of all
The Accompts which as soon as received I will
present to the Lords [illegible] of the Treasury

The departure of My Lord Culpeper
from His government not only without leave
but contrary to His Majesties express commands
in Councill has so displeased The king
that the enclosed Inquisition has been found
against His Lordships Office which of Governor which is now
seised unto His Majestie
forfeited unto His Majesty
who has thereupon appointed my Lord
Howard of Effingham a Peer of England
to suceed in the Government with the same Salary
(of 2000 pound) and other advantage formerly
granted to my Lord Culpeper. And as you may

may expect from me a Character of
your new Governor I cannot but assure give you my opinion
you that you will find His Lordship a
person of great honor & prudence
& steddiness in the discharge of his
Trust and one who by his continual
residence in the Country & his hospitality
will maintain the dignity of the Government
His Lordship is orderd to make all hast to
repair Virginia & will embark I
suppose within a month at the furthest
By which conveyance you shall not
faile to hear from me again and
my in the meanwhile ^ may be assured that
I am
of my being

The foregoing letter was sent you lately by the
Culpeper since which I have received your of the 23 of
July with the Accompts & other papers annexed
which I will immediately represent to the Lords of
the Treasury, My Lord Howard will embark
within less than a Month the Commission of
cheif Governor being already passed under the Great
Seale I have nothing more to ad to the respect
wherewith I am Sr your William Blathwayt

the Quit rents will now be taken
into the King's hands as well as the
other profits granted to the Patentees
