Sr.
The Information I had of some Interlopers being in the Eastern harbors of this
province together with a desire to see what Collonell Copley will do about Mr Blathwayts
Commission of Auditor etc. hastens my coming hither. I find him grown very fatt
he drinks much & pleases himself in amusing the easye hearers with larg
& fulsome discourses of his Conduct in obtaining this government he promised me to
promote Mr. Blathwayts interest. but was not pleased to find it not renewed in
King William's tyme, & in his cupps told me, he was a great Enemy to King William & Queen Mary in not
entring true Minutes in my Lord Ballamors case; I spend my morning in doing
little the Governor not rising till 11 or 12: I am going to Summersett County in this
province, where the Scotch Interlopers haue beat the English out of all Trade, about
14 are already sayld some yet remaining, if I cannot seize them now. I hope
to discourage their coming another yeare. The 10th: the Generall Assembly began to sitt
the Governor tho very much indisposed held up to make them a speech. Soon after
had a Apoplectick fitt & is dangerously sick, this air & interprance will soon
make room for another: I haue seen Mr Blaikstone their president as full of
flattery tho not so crafty as Mr Dudley. the Councill is composed of shreds
like a Taylors cushion, of some English Scotch & Irish. the latter are open
abettors of the illegall Trade: the people as yet haue this Governor in great admi
ration, tho' not a few know his circumstances at home: & feare he will prove
another man in tyme. here is setled communication betwixt this place and
virginia. I find it very dfficult &p excessive chargeable in travelling here,
my humble service to mr Blathwayt, to Mr Chaplin & to Mr Parry pray
deliver the inclosed as directed I am Sr.
Your most humble & most obliged Servant
Edward Randolph.
