November. 2. 1685
Honourable Sr.
Inclosed is the copy of what I wrote by Peter Clark
who departed from this port about 7 weeks since
& is yet scarce 10 leauges from hence being a
new ship disasted and uncapable to sayle and
therefore I fear will scarce ever arrive otherwise
I should not have given your honour the trouble
of a copy since which I have also had duplicates
of the same packets by Captain Stoddard and have
dispatched them with all Care and Certainty.
We are every day expecting Captain Jolles by whom
we expect advice of his Majesties commands in the
regulation of the government the happy issue of
the rebellions allowing room for a consideration
of remoter affayrs. Mr. Randolph's last letters tell
us of his coming away speedily & therefore I write
not to him here are greater distinctions of per
sons obsereved upon the reports of the late rebelli
ons then ever before and the perfect disappoint
ment of the expectations of some evill minded per
sons I hope will tend to a better setling and qui
eting of the most private thoughts of any Delay
of obedience to his Majesties commands. I humbly
pray the delivery of the inclosed to my lord privy
seal if that by Clark should not arrive which
is the same with this.
The fears of troubles with the indians that I ad
vise of in other letters are happily blown over
and a good agreement is again as well setled
as can be obtained with men of such perfidy as
they are guilty of I pray daily for your health
and happiness and advancement in his Majesties
favour and service and that I may allways
have your commands wherein I may Shew my
self you Honnars Most obliged &
faithfull Servant
Joseph Dudley
My Most Humble Service to Mr Povey.
this Letter to My Lord privy seal is unhapilyin my packet to your Self in Clark
& not here
