from the Camp before Limerick.
29th: 1690.

Sr.

I thanke god the Camp agrees very well with me & with Collonell Lenson
whom I found very well & Braue; he desired me to present his Seruice
to Mr Justice Povey. to you & Mr John Povey: 27th. at 4 in the afternoon.
began a sharp assault of the Breach made in the walls of the Irish
Town: Collonell Douglas his men much wounded many kild & many officers
lost in his Collonell Cutts Regiment & the Dutch Regiments. Cutts much
wounded & aboue 20 Dutch officers: they had entred the breach but were
repulsed : & the losse most post upon the Granadeers who were foremost in the
Action : the Irish had made a mine in their Trenches which they blew up
so soon as our men entred them. Our men had possession of a counterscarfe
& of the Spurr nigh the Breach but were knockd at head with stones from
the walls : & tho the Breach was very larg yet the defendants had made
it up with Turfe & had made turn pikes at the Entry of the streets
so that our men were were kild with push of pike, & hand granades. the
losse on our side is not known. yesterday a Drummer was sent for a parley to
bury our dead but they refused it they are stripd & lye in their Trenches &
nigh their walls. Our gunes continue to Batter at the old Breach & at the
Bridge which the old & the new Town. pray god send us faire weather. this
action has very much animated the defenders we haue expects of parlys
getting together at seuerall places : Cork & Kingsale will be encouraged from
here to hold out. tis difficult to travell the Country. pray god prosper his
Majestie in this as in his former attempts. my humble Seruice to y<em.our Lady to Sr
Edmund Andros to Mr Chaplin & Mr Povey.
