off Cape Henry. July: 17th: 1692

Sr:

The bearer hereof Mr Isaac Gerrart is lately come from South Carolina
he has been in publick Employment & can giue you a perticuler account
of the present distracted state of that place thro'. the arbitrary proceeding
of the proprietors. managed by Collonell Ludwell: Its the opinion of
all Gentlemen here that Its for their Majesties Interest to settle that
plantation vnder an Immediate Governor from the Crown: for as it is
now more of the Inhabitants are assured of their Lands & Estates.
I intend at my return from New England to make a visit theither
by that tyme I shall haue an oppertunity throly to vnderstand
the resolutions of the people & will gett an Addresse from them to
their Majesties that they would please to take them vnder their im
mediate protection

Lieutenant Governor Nicholson has
discoursd Gerratt & has
promised to assist me all he
can at my return, in manageing in that province
for their Majesties Service.

I hope if I bring that place vnder their Majesties obedience I shall
be well rewarded for my care & charg

Sr: Captain Townsend Our Commandore will hasten the Bearer to you.
& will giue you an account from the first port he maks both of
the fleet & of his perticuler proceedings.
